m_legacies_ooc | The Application

In the early going, I'm going to be pretty easy on applications. The people who jumped on this have talked through characters some, so I'm going to try and place a reasonable amount of trust in people. Eventually, once there is more established, we'll be moving to using DC-Legacy's app process.

Meanwhile, however, notes from the current moderator:
1. Before rping, all characters should have their character profile in their personal journal, at a minimum, so other people can easily reference what your character can do and info about them.
2. Be reasonable.
3. Characters can be powerful. Gods and cosmic powers have a history with the Avengers, and even many more "mundane" characters on the roster can be extremely potent. We're trying to capture that "Avengers" feel here, so there's a reasonable amount of wiggle room, BUT...
3A) In trying to capture that "Avengers" feel, a big focus of many plots is going to be making sure that the end-all and be-all of effective characters is not the high end. Many plots will only be able to be resolved by teamwork, and/or by the badass normals - despite being utterly outclassed by many teammates, how many times have we seen Captain America or Hawkeye be the one to save the day?
3B) On the same note, the big, big guns tend to get their moments. Only they can fight the Hulk, or Atlas, or others. Only they can withstand the new giant robot of DOOOOM... so, pretty much per their usual role in team comics, the bigger a gun you are, the less things will be specifically plotted for you. The more "badass normal" you lean towards, the more times plots will probably lean towards making sure you have cool stuff to do towards resolution... everyone has a role to fulfill.
4. Read the ooc note on Support Staff. The amount of time and energy you put into playing support characters for others and giving them RP and individual stuff, and not making it feel like we're rping inside an 8 character vacuum, will be taken into account for apps or stuff you might want to do in the future.
5. If you're going to sort of cover someone else's schtick, check with them. Thor and Hercules, or Herc and She Hulk can co-exist on the same team fine, and even be complementary. Within an rpg, we want to make sure everyone feels they have something they can contribute, or at least feel comfortable with the character roles. This is not a warning that doubling up on a power or schtick is forbidden - just talk with people about characters ahead of time.
6. Power-ups: These happen sometimes in comics. They may happen in the story. But before they happen, you MUST clear it with the mods. Do not surprise people with suddenly having powers not in your profile, or having them at a stronger than indicated level, or introducing something from totally outside game/Marvel canon. The application process isn't going to be too restrictive - but once you have an approved character, you're approved only for them as apped for. This shouldn't be necessary to say... but I've seen too many examples of someone apping a char, playing for a couple weeks, and doing something where they gain 10 new powers or radically powerup/change.

(Please either post your sample roleplay below or post the link where it may be easily found. Please include dialogue where possible. Please note that we will not accept applications which utilise characters from other fandoms (If you're a DC Comics fan, we have a sister communities covering both the present DC period and DC Legacies era. Please ask for details.)

Please give the admins at least 24-48 hours to respond to your app request. (If it's near the end of a school quarter, please give us a little more leeway.) Once you hear from us, we will have a team of players review your application and hopefully get back to you with an answer as soon as possible. If you haven't heard a final answer within a week, please check with us. One of our priorities is to not leave people hanging wherever possible.

WHEN we respond, we will respond with either a YES, a NO (with reasons why), or a TEST SCENE. The third option, which is common, is when we want to see more from you to see how both you and your character would interact with someone already in the game - often someone your character would have a close relationship with. Once your test scene is completed, we will then respond shortly thereafter with a YES or a NO.

I) Physical description: Natalie is nearing (and eagerly awaiting) her fourteenth birthday. She’s Caucasian with blue eyes, medium-length blond hair, and an athletic build. Clearly not done growing yet, she’s about average height for her age and about average weight for her age and activity level. Her clothing choices tend toward athletic clothes or jeans and T-shirts, and she always wears a charm bracelet on her left wrist.

J) Abilities:
-Pym Particles: Capable of growing to giant size or shrinking down to insect size. Prefers the latter.
-Intelligent: She’s not a genius, but she’s in a couple of advanced classes.
-Mechanical Aptitude: Very good at taking things apart, figuring out how they work, and reassembling them. She can sometimes cobble things together Frankenstein’s Monster-style, but they don’t look pretty and they will fall apart eventually – hopefully after they’ve done what she needed them to do.
-Computer Hacking: Still new to it, but learning everything she can as fast as she can.
-Being Sneaky: With or without the Pym particles, she’s pretty good at not getting caught poking around places she shouldn’t be.
-Always Armed: That charm bracelet she always wears around her wrist? Actually has a GPS on it, and at most of the other “charms” are little spy-bots. She also carries a pocket knife.
-Filched Tech: Has ready access to the labs of Cassandra Lang, Victor Mancha, Chase Stein, and Hank Pym, among others. Has smuggled some abandoned projects back to her room to work on.
-Hand-to-Hand Combat: Has some training, as is only practical when one is the child of super heroes.

Backstory:
As demonstrated by the shenanigans involving Billy and Tommy, it’s really damn hard to conceive a baby with a synthetic human. And people are generally reluctant to let a super hero couple adopt. Fortunately, Chase Stein is a very good friend (“You want to borrow a cup of my what?”), and less than a year later, Natalie Imogene Lang is born. She had a concerning heart-murmur at birth, but it disappeared within a couple of days – not that it has stopped her parents from worrying about it.

As neither of her parents have particularly “secret” identities, Natalie has grown up essentially as a third-generation super hero on both sides. Her family has made it clear to her that she can do whatever she wants with her life, and she’s been quick to assure them that she has every intention of doing so. Like her mother before her, she’s filched herself Pym Particles regularly over the years and had already triggered her size-changing abilities by age twelve. She also enjoys reading up on the latest technology – that is, when she’s not tinkering around with said technology in the labs of the scientists she knows!

While she’s not yet old enough to officially begin her training as a Young Avenger, she’s eagerly awaiting that birthday and working toward her intended position on the team by practicing computer-hacking and with the technology she has available to her.

O) Sample Post:
Natalie tilts her chin up, staring somewhat cross-eyed at her reflection in the mirror as she tries to find the right spot on her neck for the small “temporary tattoo” in her hand. It’s not really a temporary tattoo, but instead one of the “epidermal electronics” that her mother’s been working on. This one should (in theory) let her control one of her little spybots with her voice instead of her computer. And if she puts it in the right place, she can hide it under a scarf or something – which reminds her, she’ll have to start wearing more scarves.

She’s sure that most girls her age aren’t planning their wardrobes around disguising super-advanced technology on their person. But then, most girls her age aren’t nearly as awesome as she is.

Holding the not-tattoo in place with her fingers, Natalie licks the other thumb and swipes the digit over the sheet to dissolve the water-soluble coating so that it’ll stick to her skin. She’d like to think that she can feel the tingle as the wires make their connection, but it’s probably just wishful thinking. She goes through the motions of washing her hands before she leaves the bathroom and heads back to her room, just in case someone’s paying attention. Once she gets back to her room, she settles down behind her computer, which is positioned so that the screen can’t be seen by anyone coming in the door, and opens up a minimized window. Immediately she sees her room from the perspective of the knuckle-sized robot sitting on her desk.

“Ugh, that zit looks huge!” she says, leaning forward to look at her screen, which of course changes her little buggy’s view of the Huge Zit of Horror she’s just noticed. Still, ewwwww.

But down to business. She is more than gratified to discover that the little electronic patch on her neck does everything it was promised to do. Her buggy takes flight at her command and circles the room a couple times, landing on walls and crawling the practice course just as easily as if she was using her computer to issue the commands. Unfortunately when she opens the door to start testing the range of her control, it’s just in time to find her mother there, poised to knock.

“Dinner’s going to be ready in about ten minutes,” her mother says, lowering her hand. “Time to come and set the table.” She frowns and leans forward, reaching out toward Natalie’s chin. “What’s that on your neck?”

Natalie steps back and covers the spot with her hand, thinking fast. If her mom finds out she’s filched this, she’ll definitely take it away, and Natalie’s not done experimenting with it yet.

“Uh, grease, I think,” she says, making a show of inspecting her (not greasy at all) fingers. “I was helping Uncle Chase out today, I guess I didn’t clean up as well as I thought I did. I’ll go wash and set the table.” Cue charming, guileless smile. Buy it buy it buy it buy it…

Her mother looks at her funny for a moment, then shrugs and turns away. “All right, sweetie.” Yes! Natalie zips out of her room and toward to bathroom, so she can “wash up” (AKA “find Mom’s concealer”), and doesn’t hear her mother say under her breath, “I really need to remember to lock up my projects when she’s around...”

Is she going to be tied in with the Avengers or X-Men somehow?

That's really my only question on this, given that right now, the only applications being taken are for the teams with admin support. Indies and other teams exist, are out there, and have some great ideas kicking around - but there is no one running anything in any fashion for these people, and I've asked everyone to keep things to Avengers or Avengers-support types who tie in with one or another of the existing chars for side-plottiness until or unless someone is willing to step up and run for indies, for an F4, etc. - this has applied to everyone.

Otherwise, the character looks great. This is distinctly one of those questions based upon 'its not you, its that no apps are being taken for indies, for F4, etc. until someone volunteers to plot for them or otherwise support them' - Blanche and Beth volunteered to admin the X-Men, and hence they exist and are appable. If someone volunteers to admin a supernatural team, they become appable, etc. - unless she's going to either join the Avengers in some fashion (or the X'ers, in which case talk to Blanche and Beth), or tie in enough to an existing Avenger enough that she would effectively be part of the regulars in 'their comic book' - just like I've told Chris and Kate with the Future Foundation ideas and others regarding their chars, the comm is not opening up the whole universe - because I'm not up for running that or giving it any admin support.

If you want to work out some past and tie in with an existing Avenger, have her join, or see if someone wants to admin a team where she's a good fit - then absolutely!

I) Physical description (face, build, weight): Dark, with pale features, Janus has strong Romanian heritage which shows on his features. Tall and handsome, with a muscular, athletic build, Janus wears his hair short and keeps his facial hair shaved. 20 years old, Janus wears contemporary clothes.

J) Abilities: Janus has a number of poorly-defined abilities even he doesn't fully understand -- primarily to be used as plot device powers. These powers tend to be associated with transitions and transformations. He can sense transitions and transformations, and can ease such things, though he cannot instigate them.

As a half-vampire, he possesses an immunity to a number of vampiric abilities, such as their hypnotic stare. He is also stronger, faster, and more durable than a normal human, though not significantly so. He may someday be able to develop additional vampiric abilities, though not at this time. He does not have any traditional weaknesses of vampires (though if glitter-bombed, he might sparkle, but whoever did that to him would face some sort of consequences, surely).

K) Weaknesses and flaws: Janus's most powerful abilities are not fully understood by him, and can only be used instinctively much of the time. In addition, his dad is Dracula. This has some rather significant disadvantages as well, mostly in the attention it gets him.

N)Relatives (living or dead): His mother, Domini. His stepfather, Nick. His half-sister (on Dad's side), Lilith (undead, sometimes). His father, Dracula (undead).

Backstory: Mom was a Satanic cultist who married the Lord of Vampires and conceived him in a Satanic ritual. Dad was an immortal being who thirsts for the blood of mankind. As an infant, he was accidentally killed, driving mom out of the cult and away from Dad. A few days later, an angel possessed his body and merged with him, and transformed him into a golden-skinned angelic figure that battled Dracula, trying to kill him out of love. When dad temporarily died, the angel left, putting him back in mom's care as a once-again living infant.

He was brought up in a normal life. Domini remarried, and Janus went to school. Domini told him stories of his father, but he never really believed them.

He will join the team of horror-based heroes once the team forms. This story will serve as an origin-of-sorts for him.
